Thursday, 17 September 1936, 4 a.m.

“YOU LET THE prime suspect go off in an ambulance with the victim?” McLennan looked at Garson like he was a prize fool.

“It happened too fast. I only just arrived on the scene. Before that it was just the rookie. Freeman. He’s off at the hospital now, making sure nothing happens.” Garson was fuming internally. As if McLennan would have been able to do things differently! The lazy bastard had only just bothered to show up, hours late. Even now, he’d only wandered into the bedroom and started poking around; even Garson had already had a good look.

“Alibis?” McLennan went to the window and looked out, as if he thought the culprit could be out there.

“There was a party. Everyone had been drinking. No one seems sure where anyone else was. Goodman is the main suspect because we know he was in the room with the victim earlier that evening, though he told Freeman that he was in the living room when she fell. We got an eyewitness who can verify that he was, but he hadn’t been there for long.”

“So he could have pushed her and hurried back to alibi himself before the body was discovered.” McLennan took a swig from a hip flask and Garson tried not to look appalled.

“Well, she’s not exactly a body yet; she’s still breathing, far as I know, but yes. That’s what I was thinking.”

“All right, well, let’s go and speak to the residents.”

As they walked out into the living room, Mrs. Linfield was speaking: “I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

“Think what’s a good idea, Mrs. Linfield?” McLennan boomed out, making the woman jump.

She shot a panicked look in her husband’s direction. Garson wondered if there was more going on in this apartment than met the eye.
